Fruit Chaat

Zingy Indian-style fruit snack with chaat masala, lemon, and mint. Light fuel for breakfast, evening snack, tea-time, or pre-workout.

Fruit chaat is more seasoned than a plain fruit bowl and portioned as a snack rather than a large meal side. It is a produce-led alternative to fried namkeen.

Default is Jain, no-onion/no-garlic, soy-free, nut-free, and gluten-free. Use firmer fruits so the chaat does not turn watery.

Ingredients

  • 12 cups Mixed Fruit, diced (apple, papaya, banana, pomegranate, guava, or seasonal mix)
  • 2Juice of 1/2 Lemon
  • 31/2 tsp Chaat Masala
  • 41/4 tsp Roasted Cumin powder
  • 5Pinch of Black Salt
  • 61/4 tsp Red chilli powder (optional)
  • 7Fresh Mint, chopped
  • 8Coriander leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Dice fruit into even, bite-size pieces and place in a mixing bowl.

Add banana last so it does not turn mushy.

  2. 2

Add lemon juice, chaat masala, roasted cumin, black salt, and optional chilli powder.

Pomegranate arils add crunch without nuts.

  3. 3

Toss gently until every piece is lightly coated.

For pre-workout, keep chilli mild and portion moderate.

  4. 4

Fold in mint and coriander. Taste and adjust lemon or chaat masala.

If fruit is very sweet, extra lemon keeps the chaat bright.

  5. 5

Serve immediately while fruit is crisp.

Do not prepare hours ahead; juices collect at the bottom.

Seasonal chaat mixes
  • Summer: mango, watermelon, muskmelon.
  • Winter: guava, orange segments, apple, pomegranate.
  • Add cucumber for a lighter, more hydrating snack.
Chaat finishes
  • A drizzle of thin mint chutney for evening snack.
  • Skip black salt if you prefer a cleaner fruit taste.
  • Keep portion smaller before workouts than as an evening snack.
